Can You Really Lose the Right to Protect Your Life?
Today’s case may sound like a crazy hypothetical, but it actually is a pending petition before the United States Supreme Court. Washington Gun Law President, William Kirk, discusses the case of Fort v. the United States, a matter where a convicted felon, temporarily armed himself, when confronted with violent attackers, and successfully deployed lethal force. The local prosecutors found it to be a lawful use of force in self defense, and never charged him with any crime related to the shootings. That did not stop the United States, however, from convicting Fort for being a felon in possession when he actually saved his own life from a violent attack. Then, to make matters worse, the Courts precluded him from ever raising this defense. Will the Supreme Court actually take a look at this case? What do you think should be done here. Let’s discuss all of that today and arm ourselves with education.
