AR-15 Wielding Citizen Unloads On Car Thief, Destroying Other People’s Property
Tides turned on an attempted car break-in after the car owner at an apartment complex confronted the thieves with an AR-15.
Metro Nashville Police Officers say a car owner at an apartment complex saw two people trying to break into his car on his surveillance camera.
Police say not long after, gunfire erupted, resulting in one of the would-be thieves taking a shot in the back (hiding in a dumpster), and multiple cars & apartments taking extensive damage.
Here’s the thing about using deadly force to defend property.
Every state is different, but for the most part, Except for Texas, and that’s in very specific situations; no state lets you use deadly force to protect property.
But In most states, you can use non-deadly force to defend your property.
If the thief or vandal threatens you with serious harm, you can escalate to deadly force.
So, you can end up using deadly force, but you have to start with nondeadly force first, which increases your risk.
Some states let you use deadly force immediately if you believe nondeadly force would be too dangerous from the start.
So, generally, you can’t use deadly force to protect property.
But there are exceptions, especially when the situation escalates or involves serious crimes. You have to Know your state’s laws and stay informed.
Most people never take the time to learn their state laws on self-defense, and they should because not only are they more or less different in every state, but sometimes they change, and ignorance of the law is not an exception in court.
